Neo Environmental were commissioned to undertake a programme of archaeological observation as part of a planning condition for a residential unit. The site lies within an area of historic medieval settlement with Iron Age and Romano-British activity also identified locally. An archaeological watching brief was therefore required during initial construction works.

Neo Environmental’s involvement:
Neo Environmental initially produced the Written Scheme of Investigation (WSI) for the required watching brief before undertaking the subsequent monitoring on the 19th January and 12th February 2016. Excavation for the foundations and regarding works revealed a deep overburden of soil probably related to the former use of the area as an allotment. The construction works were completed efficiently and no archaeological features or artefacts were encountered.

Neo Environmental’s hard work and dedication has once again paid dividends with a further national award nomination!  The company has been short-listed for the prestigious Business Green Leaders Awards 2016 in the ‘Small Business of the Year’ category. The awards ceremony will be held at The Brewery in London next Wednesday the 6th of July and will bring together over 600 executives, entrepreneurs, investors, policymakers, and campaigners to celebrate the green economy’s most exciting and innovative achievements from the past 12 months. It is both a great privilege and honour for Neo Environmental to have been short-listed for the awards and we look forward to attending.

Neo Environmental are currently undertaking a Noise Impact Assessment for a new dwelling located near the M74 in Glasgow. The assessment includes a roadside noise assessment which was conducted in accordance with the guidance found in the Calculation of Road Traffic Noise (CRTN) document.
The contract involved liaising with TranServ who manage and maintain the trunk road network to allow the assessment to be conducted safely.

Today Neo’s director, Paul begins travelling to Nkhamenya Secondary School in Malawi. Paul is part of a group that will be travelling to the area to help install solar panels, build a canteen and generally try and help the children in the area. Paul joined this trip (self-funded) to assist in this great program and to try and identify sustainable energy solutions to help this project further.

We will share photos and stories as we get them and hope you join us in wishing him good luck on this amazing trip!

This Wednesday, Neo Environmental Ltd are attending and speaking at the Solar Ireland Conference in Dublin.

We will be discussing our experience of completing environmental assessments for co-location projects, which we have been involved in across the UK.

Paul has previously presented this topic to the Edinburgh chapter of the Royal Town and Planning Institute (RTPI) two years ago and it is great to see the same project types being considered in Ireland. With opportunities for maximising grid connections and battery storage, the co-location of projects provide some exciting opportunities.

Neo Environmental Ltd are proud to announce our sponsorship of theQueen’s University Senior Camogie team, who have had a great season while wearing our logo proudly on their jersey!

A number of our Belfast staff have graduated from the University, so it is great to give something back to future graduates.

This weekend will also see Neo attending a fundraiser for Nkhamenya Secondary School in Malawi, which our director, Paul will be visiting through the summer to assist in this great program, as well as identifying opportunities for using sustainable energy.

The fundraising dinner dance on Friday the 20th May at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Glasgow will help fund the various improvement works at the school, with all donations going direct. Any contributions would be appreciated. Tickets are almost sold out and at £46 per person, include a 4-course meal, music from the Mick Tausney Band, and a great time guaranteed for all.

There are some magnificent raffle prizes up for grabs at the event including a round of golf with Celtic Captain and Scotland player Scott Brown and tennis lessons with Andy Murray!

Our director Michael’s football team, Springhall Spartans AFC are competing in the 2016 Arrow Cars Cup Final this Friday at Fullerton Park.

A stunning idyllic photo of our ecologists at work, with the mist in the background, on the 5MW solar farm at Balhearty, currently being built out by Lark Energy. We have conducted all the environmental assessments for the successful planning consent and undertaken Clerks of Works for the construction stage of the 14 hectare project in Clackmannanshire, Scotland.

Our Irish office is currently working on a further 140MW of solar projects in the Republic of Ireland and we had a very successful few days last week at the Energy Show in the RDS in Dublin. Thank you to all who visited us there, the event was extremely well attended. The company has now worked on in excess of 500MW of solar farm projects!

It has been a busy first quarter for the ecology department at Neo, with various site work and reporting being undertaken. Site work so far includes the end of the wintering bird surveys, otter and badger surveys as well as ecological clerks of works (ECoW) at a solar development within the Clackmannanshire council area, and a flood prevention scheme within Edinburgh Council catchment area.

Currently Neo are assisting McLaughlin & Harvey at the Leith Flood Prevention Scheme by undertaken pre-commencement ecological surveys, provided guidance and mitigation, supervising the installation of an artificial otter holt (photograph below), and undertaken ECoW watching briefs as part of the European Protected Species Licence for otter which has been granted by SNH.

Over the next few months the ecology team at Neo will be extremely busy undertaking surveys for breeding birds, great crested newts, bats, otters and badgers; to name but a few species. As some species are only active a short period within the year, the spring and summer months are a particularly busy time for field work. The ecology team at Neo are always happy to aid new and existing clients, so get in touch today should you require any advice.

Neo Environmental have just completed six weeks of archaeological monitoring for the installation of a 9.5MW solar farm in Essex. The surrounding archaeological context to the site was particularly rich in prehistoric remains including Bronze Age cremation burials and cropmarks indicative of prehistoric settlement. Our archaeological team monitored over 1km of cable trenches and 500m of access track required for the installation of the scheme.
Recently, we were involved in assessing the potential impact of an energy from waste site in Falkirk which was within the buffer zone for the Antonine Wall; a World Heritage Site running across Central Scotland. Our team were also out in the Scottish Borders to conduct an archaeological assessment of land adjacent to a Category B listed Church in Eddleston to ascertain the archaeological potential of the site as part of a planning application for a residential development. In addition, we conducted a walkover survey of a section of General Wade’s Military Road in Perth and Kinross prior to the installation of a tourist view point near the Devil’s Elbow close to the A93.
The heritage and archaeology team have been pleasantly surprised by the amount of interest our new offices in England, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland have been generating. We have been particularly busy conducting evaluations for housing projects in Northamptonshire and are excited to be part of the first solar farm applications in the Republic of Ireland.
Our geophysics department has been going from strength to strength and we have been busy conducting surveys in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland in the first three months of the New Year.

Neo are heading out this month as we have 2 different events we are attending.

Paul, Michael and Claire (our latest Irish recruit!) will be at the Energy Show at the RDS on April 6th and 7th discussing all our services relating to the Renewable energy markets.  Then on 27th and 28th we are attending the North England Build expo.

Come and say hello at either of the events and see what we have been up to.
